    Is THIS Racism?

    By GJFlash

While we're on the subject of race, I would like to relate a story to you and get some opinions, if you good folks have a minute to comment...

An African-American friend of mine was doing a home repair job in Highlands Ranch last week.  That part of town is predominantly white (which is kind of like saying that snow is predominantly white).

The starter went out on his truck, and he had to walk to Checker Auto to get a new one (we'll forget the fact that he was harassed, called racist names, and threatened all the way there...one man actually SPIT on him as he waited to cross the street).

This was on a Saturday, when auto supply places are very busy.

He went up to the white cashier and politely asked her if he could get a new starter.

"You have to go to the parts counter," the white girl snapped, very rudely.

He went back to the parts counter and stood there, and was completely ignored by the white employees working behind the counter.

He watched, with growing anger, as one white guy after another white guy was given service, but the white employees behind the counter wouldn't even look at him (much less help him).

No exaggeration, white people would walk into the store, stand in line behind him, and the white employees at Checker would literally look right through my black friend and say "can I help you, sir?" to the white man standing behind him.  By his count, 17 white people walked in after him and were given prompt and efficient service, while my black friend was completely ignored.

My black friend didn't say anything, he just stood there.  He stood at the very front of the counter and was completely ignored for more than 15 minutes.

Finally, he said something to the white employee standing right in front of him.

"Is there a number I can take or something?", he asked kindly, "because I've been standing here for fifteen minutes and you guys have helped everyone who comes in here except me."

The white employee behind the counter smirked at him and said, and I quote:

"Why don't you go back to YOUR neighborhood and make THEM help you."

My friend didn't say anything (wisely, you know how racist white people can be), he just turned around and left.

When he got home, he called the Checker home office customer care number, told them this story, and was laughed at.  They told him that he "was imagining things."  When he asked to talk to a supervisor, they laughed some more and actually hung up on him.

My black friend eventually had to go "back to his own neighborhood" to get a starter (and no, he did NOT get it from those racists at Checker).

In my opinion, this is racism.  I would like to know what you guys think.

Should my black friend call All Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and Barack Obama and sue the living crap out of Checker Auto?

Should this be a story worthy of national headline news?

Have you formed your opinion?  Would you like to comment?

If so, please comment BEFORE reading the following...

This did NOT happen to any of my African-American friends...

...It happened to ME, and I AM WHITE.

I was NOT in Highlands Ranch, I was at 38th and Federal, a predominantly Hispanic area (which is like saying...well, let's just say that there are NO white people living in that part of town).

All of the Checker employees were Hispanic, and all of the customers were also Hispanic (and yes, I was harassed, called racist names, and threatened all the way there by the neighborhood Hispanics, and yes, one Mexican spit on me as I waited to cross Federal Blvd.).

Is this still racism?  If not, is it because I'm white?

The "good" folks at Checker Auto sure seemed to think so.

Where's MY Jesse Jackson?  Who will be MY Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.?

I would really like to hear some opinions on this, and I would like to ask that you throw your money down the toilet before giving ONE THIN DIME to the RACISTS AT CHECKER AUTO SUPPLY.  Thanks for your support.

    Please discuss.

    Either case is racism.
It takes a better man to just leave it with them, than to cause a problem. That is what they would like anyway.
Unfortunately we have a lot of anger and hate in America ---strung along throughout the ages---it is not just now that we see it...it has been here all along.
It's just that we may not have been one the receiving end until now.

Unfortunately, I think only the first version of the story would make headlines. But I would contact the Better Business Bureau (for what that's worth) AND sue the living crap out of Checker. I know they just lost my business.

Have you considered contacting the media? (If you can find an agency that doesn't coddle Hispanic racists, that is.)

I would bet money you would not find any newspaper or tv station that would lay a hand on this.
    Why?
Because it is not the 'correct' thing to do now...
It's up to 'bloggers' and 'regular' people to make the push against Illegal Immigration and such things.
But, it is a lost cause, people. Ever since WWII and the US became a sponsor of the UN, and the 'globalization' really began in earnest...well, look at what 'globalazation' has come down to.
It might be 'nice' to 'understand them' better with better technology and so forth, but part of 'globalization' is the watering down of salaries and wages with 'them' in that water.
Now THAT's Globalazation that any dumb person can understand.
    So, you want more 'globalization'?
We're so 'global' now that we don't know who we are as a nation.

I am a black man. I am not african-anything. I was so damn mad when I read the first part of this article that I couldn't see straight. When i got to that last part all of a sudden I wasn't mad anymore at all. Really had me thinking there, man.

You are right, some people can't and won't see things from all sides. I won't shop at Checker anymore either. Good article, gjflash.

your profile says you live in Latin America so you must have really needed that part bad! I for one find it interesting that the stories match exactly and would suggest you posted this simply to stir up your blog.
    I don't buy either story.

amyaleahbrynna - You must be new in town then. Things like that happen all the time in Denver.

I was mad when I read the first part of your story also. I live close to Highlands Ranch and I have been to more than one Checker on that end of town. And, with a black man. Never have we been treated like that and as I read on, I began to re-think the story.
It is almost like I would have expected that type of story to come from area on Federal. It is a scary place and I know because I have been there also. So what does this say - to expect racism from the "mexican" neighborhood, but be surprised when it happens on the "south" end of the driven snow? (white)
I guess the truth of the story is racism is everywhere - in every neighborhood - and comes in every color.
I think speaking out about businesses who treat customers this way is a great way to deal with it.
I think you should have gotten names of every person that was there working and the managers name and it is not that hard to find their corporate office.
I am sorry this happened to you. It makes no sense. But then racism never does.

Sounds like racism and sure does smell like it. But honestly, so does your comment:
(wisely, you know how racist white people can be). It's all the same. The only thing that changed was the color of someone's skin. So, honestly with that kind of attitude, you aren't any better than a Checker Auto Employee.

Since I see you are a contractor, do you by chance hire any Latinos? I am familiar with Denver and I know alot of contractors do.

    I note that
    amy aleah bryana
is just swinging by. Not here long.
Coming up with very 'astute' remarks. Should be interesting to see how life goes for her. I would guess she is ...Hispanic...or is some color of Hispanic...
    and for
    Lgnhrnfan
    from Greeley
    hmmmm...
    one of 'em up there
...looking for a rumble....and from the way he places his words...he may just be one of them Greeley Professors....who hates all kinds of racism....and teaches MLK thing of 'equality'...---whatever the helll that means...? What DOES it mean..? in practical terms? "Equality"...sounds like Communism I used to study. (Except it shakes out...that people become more 'unequal' than they were to begin with.
    LOL...

It is certainly interesting to take a post....it can be ANY post....and see people of all shades, shapes and sizes slide out of the woodwork---not only giving diferrent slices of truism, but actually seeing this seed of evil, of trolling, of bigotry, of insincerity....amazing ...yes, amazing...
...but, could it be...could it be...that they, themselves, have 'the problem'?

gjflash - My last comment was in response to Lgnhrnfan's post which, after reading it again, looks like it may have been meant facetiously. So nevermind my last post. Did not mean to offend.

I am definitely boycotting Checker, and will shout my reasons from the rooftops if need be.

amyaleahbrynna: This entire topic is probably way over your head. The stories were SUPPOSED to be the same, that was the POINT. I changed the races in the first version to better illustrate that point.

This DID happen, exactly as I descibed it, and I don't appreciate being called a liar.

If you lack the reading comprehension skills to understand this post, then please either:
a)ask someone to explain it to you, or
b)have a tall glass of shut the heck up.

"You know how racist white people can be"

Try reading that sentence again, folks. I was not suggesting that ALL white people are racist, I was merely saying that the white people who ARE racist have a tendency to be intolerant of other races. If you disagree with THAT statement, then by all means please say so.

It should have read "you know how people who are racists can be."

Sorry for the confusion, once a post is "headlined" I can't go back in and re-phrase an ambiguous sentence such as that one.

I find it interesting, however, the number of people who were looking for a reason to be offended.

No worries DiMur, I know that some statements can be take many different ways (take this post, for example).

Crabbie: I hire people with a passion for quality workmanship. People who can show up on time (and sober) on a consistent basis. They must be able to pass a background check, and they must be in the United States legally.

I don't know if that answers your question or not...I don't make racially-based distinctions, except maybe to note that my girlfriend is Hispanic.

BTW- "Latino" would connote "Latin in origin", which would refer to a "native or inhabitant of Latium"; e.g. an ancient Roman. My Hispanic girlfriend pointed this out to me, noting that Hispanics often speak Spanish, not Latin. She's not racist either, she's HOT.

I consider myself to be intelligent and so do others around me. I don't think that your sentance came across the way you intended it. So, your comment about "dumb down" is not necessary. I can tell you that anyone one else that reads your "headline" also agrees with me. It's clear to me that you lack the writing skills necessary. Let's put blame where it's deserved, instead of on the opinions that you have clearly initiated. Now... what was this whole thing really about? Oh.... that's right.... racism.

Well, Lgnhrnfan, "the others around me" think that I'm much smarter than you are, so THERE.

The "dumb down" comment was not directed towards you.
I have since deleted it to avoid further confusion.

"I can tell you that anyone one else that reads your "headline" also agrees with me."
How convenient to have the ability to read minds, what a gift (see if you can read mine right now).

Sorry that my writing skills don't meet your expectations. I'll be up all night worrying about it.

This type of incident will always remain isolated ,unfortunately. We as humans ,every day, prove how flaw we truly can be. No matter how mean a certain member(s) of a group treats another, we all have set up this notion that only whites can be mean. But we also set up this notion,as well, that whites could never be treated unfairly. Why you say? Because our society and the world has determined that being white means....free ride. Being anything else, means...not so lucky. So, the not so lucky will always be given the benefit of doubt because of the free ride a white individual gets (from being white) . I am not in anyway saying that this is the reality. But... It is what it is. Many view those with thee most power in this world as white individuals. Incidentally, I had a Mexican who once told me that "in Mexico" blacks would not be able to get jobs because of status and color that Meixcans use to segrate class in mexican. The darker you are ,the more likely you are to cross the border. But that fact does not matter, Mexicans are not white race . Therefor, they could never be mean to another group. Only whites can be this way. Unfortunate . maybe. But that's the way our society (black and white and other races ) view it. The man(white) with all the money (assumed) can handle it.

Well, I can see that you have lowered yourself to a game of "--- for tat". You win because I forfeit. It's difficult to take you seriously when you sound like a child.

Thanks for deleting the confusion. I wouldn't want anyone else to be offended by your inability to communicate. Reading is a gift. Writing is a talent, which requires practice. Good try though. Have a nice night.

I'll keep practicing my writing, maybe one day I'll be worthy of you. You have a nice night yourself.

Sorry, folks. Ususally I don't allow myself to be drawn into petty little pissing contests with small men like the texan here.

NoMoreStupidPeeps: I wish there were more people like you in America (about 100 million more).

My above comments do not condone what happened. A good way to deal with this issue may be to right a letter to ICE . They might find the store may have broken hiring laws. That's how you can deal with that issue gjflash. They might wont be able to prove you were treated unfairly, but illegal hiring practices might be more apparent.........

I'm a Dad, a construction contractor, a foodie, an artist, and a patriot. I'm also very afraid. I used to live in the United States, but I now reside in latin America (and I never even had to move!). I like to argue current events with facts (along with simple, reasonable human logic). I don't suffer fools gladly, so liberals, please bring your facts (if you have any). I'm a huge Denver sports fan (30 years on the bandwagon), but my favorite teams are, by far, the ones my kids play on.
